August #Gothedist

August #GoTheDist is up if you care to participate!

I have been doing #Gothedist for about 5 months now and it really helps me stay accountable. Thanks again to Robby from Fat Girl vs. World.

My Goals for August are :

  • 35 Run/walk/elliptical miles
  • Attend both sessions (weather pending) each week of Greensboro Running with Kids
  • 60 bike miles
  • Weight Train 2 times per week ( I loath weight training)

Now for a bit of a recap of July....

I knew I would be supper busy with my class so I set my goals low for July. For modality one I set the bar quite low at 50 run/walk/elliptical/bike miles and admittedly most were bike miles. I had two weeks where I did not go to the gym at all, so I found myself sitting at only 33 miles. I decided I WAS going to finish strong. Friday I threw down big time and pumped out 20 bike miles, giving me a total of 53 miles! I still wish I had logged more elliptical/run miles but I still reached my goal so I am happy with what I did.

There were also a few first for this month. That 20 miles is the furthest I have every done on the bike. I also did some sweet 12 minuet miles on the elliptical. So that means to pretty awesome personal best records! This leaves me feeling ready to kick some serious butt in August.

August is going to be back on track month for me. My classes in June and July got me so out of my schedule and I found myself completely off track. That is the past though, August is full of celebrations. Make sure you check out Wednesday's post for a supper sweet giveaway to celebrate my bloggaversary. Also in August in case you missed today's earlier post I will be starting up a running club that is kid friendly. I'm so excited!

What are your goals for August, have you set any?

Recipe Friday

Tonight’s dinner was inspired by Laura over at Becoming the odd duck. I didn’t have all the ingredients that she used so I decided to make a few alterations which turned out supper yumm!

Here are both versions Smile

Laura’s version(which I will be trying soon):

Quick Pasta Entrée
Serves 1

  • 1 1/2 oz whole wheat spaghetti
  • 1 small-medium raw broccoli (yields about 1/2 – 3/4 cup chopped)
  • 4 sundried tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup canned chick peas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp italian seasoning
  • 2 Tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
1. Boil water in stock pot. Once boiling, add whole wheat pasta and cook for 9 minutes. Feel free to add a splash of olive oil if you want to prevent sticking.
2. While pasta is cooking, chop broccoli and rinse under water. Add to microwave safe bowl and cook for 2 minutes.
3. While broccoli is cooking, dice sundried tomatoes. If using tomatoes in oil, blot oil away until dry first.
4. Add diced tomatoes and 1/4 cup chick peas to broccoli bowl and microwave together for another minute to 1-1/2 minutes.
5. Once pasta is finished, drain in colander and add back to warm stock pot. Add broccoli/tomato/chick pea mixture back to pan along with 1 tsp olive oil and spices. Mix together until spices coat everything and everything is heated together. Toss cheese in at last minute and mix. Move directly to serving bowl. Enjoy!

Here is my version:
Makes 3-4 servings
I only used approximately
  • half a head of broccoli
  • 1/4 cup of honey greek yogurt
  • 5 tsp of Light raspberry dressing
  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion
  • 1/4th cup of raisins
    • 1/2 box of whole wheat pasta

Clearly she is the chef so her directions are much better…I do more of a dump and poor type of method.
1.First I put the pasta water on to boil
2.While this was coming to a boil I chopped up my broccoli, and onion
3. Cook pasta al dente’
4. mix in yogurt, dressing and raisins
5. Lightly butter noodles and serve with broccoli salad mixed in.

I also did not cook my broccoli salad, only the Pasta

Time’s a waste’n

“Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day”
~William Shakespeare

Is time really wasting or am I just wasting time? This last couple months with summer classes has really kept me busy and killed my routine. The crazy heat here in NC has not helped either! While I do love an outdoor workout on a nice cool crisp morning those are still just excuses, the gym is nice and cool as well ( most of the time anyways). The truth of the matter is, yep you guessed it, I have pulled out that silly old excuse book again. I really wish I could loose that book!

We all have things that come up in life and get in the way but, it does not make getting your healthyness journey on impossible. It can be quite difficult some days but, not impossible. It all comes down to priorities. While school is supper important to me so is being healthy. I have let this healthyness journey slip so far down the totem pole these past couple weeks its really not even funny. I have let my eating go to complete crap and flat out quit going to the gym these last two weeks. Yes I had tons of school work going on and stress to the max, but what relieves stress better than a good workout and putting nutritious things into your body. Heck as much as I am ashamed to admit it I even bought cigarettes! What was I thinking, I quit smoking over a year ago!!! Sad smile

I’m sure you have also noticed that I have not been blogging (or writing at all, period). For me this is a big mistake. Blogging helps me keep myself accountable.   Writing/blogging keeps me mentally on track and healthy. Writing is my sanity. I know when I “cant” bring myself to write that I am not doing what I need to do to take care of me. My #gothedist goal for this month was once again not just miles but also to write 15 days, I think I have logged about 6 for the month so far. I don’t like this one bit. That was yesterday though and today is a new day!

Starting today fresh after I have my coffee (got to have this) I have my water already made up in the fridge and I will be hitting the gym this morning once the kid get’s up. I am going to get my serious sweat on. For me this journey is not about achieving a size 2 pants, it is about being able to do. I can not “do” when I skip the gym, eat crap and smoke! I know I can do this so it’s time to get busy and kick some butt!

{photo cred}

Ok so my name really isn’t Waldo but I have been feeling like I have been lost in the chaos lately that is called life. In case you don’t know I am taking a summer math course that is only 5 weeks long (normally 20 weeks) so while I miss it, the blog has taken a back seat for now. Don’t you worry though I have some exciting things coming up Smile

Here is a sneak peek of what’s to come:

  • August 3 is my official blog anniversary and I have a sweet giveaway lined up for you guys!
  • Also I have in the works plans for a Life Off the D List meet up here in Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s looking like Mid September, but no official date yet. If you would be interested in coming I’d love to know so that I can plan for enough people. Details coming soon Smile
  • There is one more secret surprise but im keeping that one under wraps a bit longer

No makeup, no frills, just sweat

Ok Im going to keep this short and sweet but do you see that picture up there, yep that picture of me. Well that picture is the face of a girl who just did 2 miles in 24 minuets! That’s right folks I did two, 12 minuet miles! I am so proud of myself I could shout it from the roof tops. Is this the fastest time, well no, but I frekin rocked those 2 miles! Just a year ago I couldn’t even do a mile much less a twelve minuet mile. Now this was on the elliptical, but even so I usually still do only about a 15 minuet mile.

This just goes to show you it can be done! Today I feel progress, today I feel strong!

Random thoughts

“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”
  ~Newt Gingrich

Lately with all the busyness of my summer sessions at school I have been lacking in the writing department. I know what you are thinking, school comes first! Yes, school does come first but for me writing is also my sanity and keeps me focused. It’s not that I have not wanted to write but more so that when I go to write I don’t know what I want to say, like I have writers block. This is  not working for me, the more I write the better I feel. I have also noticed that the more I write the more focused I stay on my goals like hot dates with Gym and getting down with the H2O.

Now I know my busy schedule will limit my time but to try and get back on track I have set 2 #gothedist goals to achieve this. The first goal is to do 50 miles either run/walk/elliptical or bike. The second goal for this month is to write 15 times. To some these may seem like big goals but for me they are on the low side. I know that I am supper busy so I wanted to set my self up for success and do what I felt like would be achievable. Because of my knee’s I have been doing a lot more bike miles so 50 is really quite low but I plan on mixing in some other miles.

I am also getting back to basics. My eating has gotten completely out of control this week. Yesterday in particular was atrocious. I have not been making healthy choices or drinking almost any water. I know because of this and the decreased amount of exercise   is why I am feeling tired all the time and not sleeping well. So back to basics it is. Back to tracking calories and water intake. Back to logging Calories burned. I am ready to get out of the 190’s, I have played around there for far to long!

Life is a Marathon not a Sprint

It feels like it has been forever since I have actually written anything serious. I have started several post but then ended up deleting them. I have also been supper, supper, supper busy with school. I started my second 5 week summer session last week, college algebra. All though we have only had four days of class it feels like a month and a half’s worth of information. I am seriously questioning my sanity level for willingly taking these classes. While I did not get the grade I wanted in my biology class I did at least pass it therefore I’m shooting for an A in my algebra class. It wont be easy and will literally require me doing 6 to 8 hours of algebra a day but it can be done. The problem with this is it doesn't leave much time for hot dates with …well anyone but especially Gym!

Instead of my usual 3-5 times a week dates with Gym these classes have dwindled my gym time down to 1 maybe 2 times a week. However I did manage a 2.4 pound loss in June! I was shocked after the stress of my first summer session. I just knew I had gained 10 pounds. I had been spending less time with Gym, my eating habits were less than great to say the least as well.   This just goes to show that my lifestyle is changing. Permanent changes are happening. Slow and steady will win the race.

This is something that has to be a permanent change. This journey itself is a marathon not a sprint, there are no easy fixes. Besides gym time part of what keeps me healthy is writing. I have defiantly noticed changes in my emotional health when I go to long without writing. For me journaling and blogging are my sanity. It helps keep me focused on the big picture and my goals. Find what works for you.
